September Flavor: Sweet Cookie Monster

September brings the sound of school buses, bathing suit sales, ridiculously appealing school supply displays,  and in most parts of the country the beginning of fall. Here in SF, not much changes other than the weather being absolutely perfect. It’s our “summer” which means the nights remain somewhat warm…

SF prides itself on not being like any other city so while I was originally going to do something involving apples because it’s hip and in season, I opted out. Not going to lie…not the biggest apple fan either. (Don’t get me started on “sour apple” flavored things. YAK.)  Instead I opted for a transitional flavor that could really appeal to any time of the year but felt this time was a good one since I have the rest of the months on lock down.

Sweet Cookie Monster. My my my what a toupee of sugar you have on your head.

Sweet Cookie Monster

The caramel is what really makes this cookie. I prepared it the same way I make the base for salted caramel ice cream so it’s up there on “to-do” list of making your brain happy. I’m excited for the ice cream of the month members to try as it’s their first non-fruit flavor so far.

Ice Cream Advice…

“The key is to eat your ice cream at a lusciously slow pace. This gives your palate a chance to warm back up before more of the frozen yumminess can cool things off again. Because this can be difficult in our rapidly moving lives, science demands that we treat this like any skill: practice, practice, practice..”

August Flavor: Peach Tree

After a three striped celebration of ice cream in July…I’m going to continue the fruit train with August’s flavor of Peach!

August is about nature’s fuzzy friend, the peach. Under the soft bristles of fruit whiskers lies summer’s candy bowl.  Peaches are in bloom and ready to shed their fuzzy coat for a dip in a vanilla and honey base with a hint of lemon to finish off the summer breeze. (This isn’t meant to sound like a candle description but it’s getting close.) Georgia is a bit of a hike, but I’m actually going peach picking specifically for this months’ flavor so they will be as fresh as can be…hopefully a video will follow. Look for this month’s flavor Peach Tree flavor to be delivered to your mouth the week of Aug. 15th!

Happy 4th of July!

Nothing says America like eagles and ice cream! Above is strawberry, vanilla bean and blueberry…red, white and blue(ish)!

Ice Cream Club!

Knock. Knock. ICE CREAM CLUB! My smarty pants friend suggested that I should start an ice cream of the month club and it peeked my interest. I’m not a monthly member of anything except for paying my cable bill (damn Real Housewives addiction). However, I am a fan of making ice cream and especially seasonal flavors. Here’s what I’m thinking…

Of course I’m not going to leave you hangin’…

club starter kit

Each member will receive a starter kit including sprinkles, cones, spoon, pint of ice cream (for that month) and official badge/magnet.

Every month you will receive one pint of ice cream, some other experiments I’m working on and various (random/fun) ice cream related items. From pre-postaged postcards to ice cream erasers and fun contests…this club is going to be like your grammy’s bingo club ON A SUGAR HIGH.

Blue Graham

‘Tis the season for those little bundles of blue bites of berry. (yeah that’s right I just typed that) Blueberries are great, they are so mysterious…they have this semi-thick  blue/violet skin that pretends to be tough but inside they have this clear-ish mild filling gel.

blueberry x-ray

I made blueberry ice cream last year but was still getting down the whole texture thing so I wanted to try it again this year with a few modifications. The first being obviously the vanilla beans I’m obsessed with it,  some lemon, and GRAHAM CRACKERS. Cinnamon and blueberries are a great combo so I opted for the “cinnamon” variety of graham crackers and had a blast eating them along the way. They are like slabs of edible sand paper that carves a nice nestled spot of delicious on your taste buds. (wow I am wordy today).

Fact: Loved this. I brought it into work and my cubicle friends really like it as well..perfect for a semi-summer day in SF. The key to making anything with fruit is to make sure it’s fresh and this was indeed a fresh group of blueberry pearls.

I had to…they are my new thing…blue graham bites!
