Ice Cream Cake

You betcha! I needed a swell reason to make an ice cream cake and there was no better setting than my dear friend’s surprise birthday party. Oh and this surprise party didn’t have just humans attending…there were 20 bunnies in her living room. YEAH WE DID! The bunnies didn’t eat the ice cream cake but everyone else did. I opted for a fan favorite, “Drunken Girl Scout” which is Bailey’s Irish Cream and thin mints. Here’s how it went down…

I am a huge fan of Carvel ice cream cakes and did some sleuthing and discovered that the iconic “cookie crumbles” are oreo cookie/chocolate wafers with Magic Shell coating to bring the group together. I ended up going old school and striped out each cookie individually, it was like separating the two characters from The Notebook, these two did not want to be split from their love from one another.

The Notebook of Edible Lovers: Oreos & Cream

Next I threw in the plain Oreos into the food processor to get a chocolate dust storm which then needed some precipitation and bonding. The Magic Shell. This is like syrup but acts kind of like a glue, hardens very quickly which made for a terrific base. No ice cream was going to leak out of this edible vault foundation.

Next came the layers of Bailey’s Ice cream and thin mints…

Cake Layers

The MVP of this team by far was the springform pan which provided the flexibility to remove the bottom from the sides. I added some wax paper to ensure independence and it worked like a dream.

Look Ma! No Sides!

Drunken Girl Scout Cake

I ended up putting an additional layer of ice cream but didn’t get a shot of it until the party…

BAM! (thanks Mia for the photo)

I am looking forward to making more cakes and variations on crust and layers so quick someone have a birthday or let’s just make one up to eat it.

Pumpkin Patch

This month brings us November’s poster child…the pumpkin. The orange bundle of strings and seeds that so many look forward to every fall. In October we participate in the manslaughter of pumpkins, however this month we ditch the creativity and have our eyes on the prize…PUMPKIN FACE.

FACT: When you eat pumpkin flavored goods, you are actually eating the outside…not the stringy guts that make your sink drain look like a walk in the park.

I can’t really speak to this flavor as my taste buds missed the memo to like pumpkin flavored things so I’m a mere backseat driver on this one. What I can say from the backseat is that this flavor is slightly spiced and cradles that fall urge to feel comforted. There’s a crew of cloves, cinnamon, ginger and a sweet high five from vanilla bean all telling jokes by the fireplace. Ginger snaps crashed the party and brought their sturdy and effective sassy self so all together you get a snippet of what fall tastes like.

October Flavor: Candy Corn Costume

Trick or ice cream! I wish more homes gave out ice cream in lieu of candy but the whole razor thing…I digress. This month’s flavor is about the multi-colored sugary fangs we all love this time of  year…CANDY CORN!

I tried a new method for this batch, the rock and salt process. This is the traditional way of making ice cream where you layer ice and rock salt to produce a below than freezing brine that ends up making the base turn to creamy and blankety ice cream! It’s a bit more time consuming but I am very pleased with the texture and creaminess so I tip my hat to you again science. K, back to the visuals…

Candy Corn Costume Ice Cream

I found edible googly eyes that I’m throwing in for club members so they can dress up their ice cream too.

Ice Cream Club!

Knock. Knock. ICE CREAM CLUB! My smarty pants friend suggested that I should start an ice cream of the month club and it peeked my interest. I’m not a monthly member of anything except for paying my cable bill (damn Real Housewives addiction). However, I am a fan of making ice cream and especially seasonal flavors. Here’s what I’m thinking…

Of course I’m not going to leave you hangin’…

club starter kit

Each member will receive a starter kit including sprinkles, cones, spoon, pint of ice cream (for that month) and official badge/magnet.

Every month you will receive one pint of ice cream, some other experiments I’m working on and various (random/fun) ice cream related items. From pre-postaged postcards to ice cream erasers and fun contests…this club is going to be like your grammy’s bingo club ON A SUGAR HIGH.

Bastani Jan

Da who? “Bastani” means ice cream in Farsi and “Jan” is used when referring to a friend or someone you care for, so if your friend’s name is Pickles and you adore her, then she would would be Pickles Jan. (If you have a friend  named “Jan” then she is DOUBLE AWESOME.) How do I know all this? Did I live in Iran for a decade? Maybs. NOT! My dear friend at work is Persian and he taught me a thing or two and since this ice cream was for him, I figured I would name is something meaningful.

Afshin Jan brought in Persian ice cream to work once and then I had it at a restaurant and liked it very much. It’s extremely unique in flavor, much like Persian cuisine which I am a huge fan of. There are three major ingredients that make up Persian ice cream: saffron, rose water and pistachios. But before we get there we need to talk about texture because I don’t leave home without it. Bastani is MEGA creamy and smooth so don’t expect it to hang around for awhile in that cone or dish of yours. This sucker is on a mission to get to know your taste buds and is not playing  hard to get. Let us begin with the essentials…

saffron mugshot

I never really had much saffron in my life, but me oh my am I excited about it. It’s a really rare spice that only yields a limited amount of “threads” which is the other form it takes, hence why it’s a hot commodity and so pricey. I opted for powder because in this form it’s simple to mix vs. the threads which need to be seeped in order to release their flavor. Just to confirm, you aren’t crazy…what you see above is a deep maroon color…in a couple of minutes you will see something completely different in color. My sous chef is a unicorn and is about to perform some magic…

rose water mugshot

The next ingredient is rose water which is a really strong flavor and usually what you taste the most in Persian ice cream. It’s extremely flavorful and you feel like you are sitting in a bed of roses when a large gust of wind comes in and delicately places a few petals on your tongue as you unassumingly yawn/stretch.  Get the picture?

pistachio mouth

This guy is clearly singing:

Nothing really much more to say than that.

I did add egg yolks because I wanted the texture true to form…CREAMY MANIA. This is how we did…

I actually don’t think this photo does it justice…this thing WAS YELLOW. (Like Coldplay “yellow”). As mentioned earlier, my unicorn sous chef wiggled its horn and cracked its knuckles and voila…maroon powder turns into bright yellow! I really enjoyed this one…though next time I might tone down the rose water and let the saffron play in the sun a bit more. Afshin Jan loved the surprise which made it even better!

Spiked Strawberry Bites

Yep. I did. I truly turned into 5 years old with this one. Well minus the whole alcohol part. Strawberries are  in season and I wanted to take full advantage so I picked up some of nature’s edible armor. Strawberries look like they are always ready to battle with their chain link pattern of seeds, but this guy was no match for what I had in store for it…I got it drunk.

tough guy was no match for the blender either…

strawberry guts

After a quick trip to the blender, I took the strawberry guts for a night on the town…we painted the town red..[hardy har har…lame joke].  I was ordering strawberry guts shots of this wonderful whipped cream vodka that absolutely tastes like whipped cream, it’s light with a subtle vanilla flavor. I then threw strawberry guts a party and put on their most special birthday suit…SPRINKLES!
